Lukashenka's camp claimed that it had collected 1.9 million signatures backing his candidacy, but many of these were gathered at workplaces or on campuses in a fashion that can only be called compulsory. For official signature data, see http://rec.gov.by/elect/prrb2006/itog_podpisi.html.

Such crude hijacking of a Christian religious narrative caused significant outrage among believers, to the point that regime-affiliated filmmaker Yury Azaronak saw his work tossed out of an April 2006 film festival that the Belarusian Orthodox Church sponsored in Minsk.

Lukashenka is not alone in using this technique. Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev went even further in January 2006 when he ran a "color-coded" campaign for reelection.

What were the true figures? A postelection survey that IISEPS carried out (despite threats of prosecution) placed Lukashenka's vote share at a more plausible but still decisive 63 percent, and found that Milinkevich had actually garnered 20 percent. The IISEPS research also showed that about three-fifths of voters found the official results either fully or mostly credible. See www.iiseps.org/3-06-1.html.

note

Comparisons between Ukraine and Belarus must take into account the size disparity between the two societies: Ukraine's population is about 46 million, while Belarus is less than a fourth that size with 10.2 million people. Thus a crowd of 20,000 in Belarus is roughly comparable to a crowd of 90,000 in Ukraine.

See www.iiseps.org/e4-06-1.html. Interestingly enough, in polling done about a month later (and available at the same Web link), IISEPS found that while the percentage approving of the protests had gone up slightly to 23.9 percent, the share of those disapproving had gone up even more - to 53.6 percent, while the category of those who professed themselves indifferent had shrunk by more than half, going from 33.7 percent of respondents to just 15.9 percent. These shifts may be taken as suggesting the degree to which official vilification of the protestors shaped the public's attitude toward them.
