This is an outstanding work which maps 294 facial hemangiomas to define the facial segmental patterns. In particular, the frontonasal segment is associated with a higher risk of associated brain anomalies. They emphasize the importance of understanding the molecular and cellular processes regulating facial development in better understanding the causes of segmental hemangiomas.

This is an excellent review of 22 children undergoing open excision of subglottic hemangiomas, emphasizing the benefits over long-term steroids or multiple endoscopic procedures, and the lack of long-term complications.

27. Hochman M, Mascareno A. Management of nasal hemangiomas. Arch Facial Plast Surg 2005; 7:295-300. This review emphasizes the eventuality of reconstructive surgery for this anatomic area, and multiple modality management. Goals of reconstruction should be to restore as near normal nasal contours before self-image is affected in the young child.

This paper puts forward the recommendation for early surgery in situations where facial hemangiomas cannot be controlled by conservative therapy, appearance has not changed in 1-2 years during the involution phase, and before school age/self-image has been permanently affected.
