This paper presents results of a large population-based study and provides evidence that maternal hyperglycemia is positively associated with the later incidence of metabolic syndrome in infants who are large for gestational age. The strength of this study lies in its ability to separately assess the impact of high birth weight and prenatal hyperglycemia on the later development of metabolic disorders.

This represents important work on the impact of maternal overnutrition on the development of the central network for appetite regulation in an animal model in which this network develops before birth, as in the human. This paper shows for the first time that lambs of ewes that are maintained on a high plane of nutrition in late pregnancy have an increased fat mass at 1 month of age and that there is a failure in these lambs of an upregulation of the expression of a key appetite-inhibitory neuropeptide in response to the increased fat mass.

Evidence is presented that the Avy mouse can be employed as a sensitive epigenetic biosensor to assess the effects of dietary methionine supplementation on locus-specific DNA methylation.
