12. 2-μm-thick sections were prepared by microtome and deposited on TEM grids for subsequent observation through 200 and 300 kV SCEM (scanning confocal electron microscopy) instruments. TEM observations were performed on thin sections (about 100 nm) at 200 kV with a Philips CM 20. High-resolution micrographs were obtained on both a FEI Tecnai F30 (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH) and a JEOL 4000FX (ONERA). Analytical electron microscopy was performed in the SCEM to confirm the elemental identity of the nanocrystalline and amorphous dense bodies in the cortex. Pb elemental mapping on hair cross sections was performed by SEM.
