    • Merchant SN, Adams JC, Nadol JB Jr. Pathophysiology of Meniere's syndrome: are symptoms caused by endolymphatic hydrops. Am J Otol 2005; 26:74-81. The authors reviewed archival temporal bones from 28 patients with a history of Meniere's disease or a histopathologic diagnosis of hydrops (79 cases). All temporal bones from subjects with Meniere's disease demonstrated hydrops, but there were nine cases with idiopathic hydrops and 10 cases with secondary hydrops that were from patients with no symptoms of Meniere's. An excellent review of relevant basic science literature is presented and the authors convincingly document that endolymphatic hydrops is likely a histologic marker rather than the cause of symptoms in Meniere's.

    • Activation of caspase-3 is associated with oxidative stress in the hydropic guinea pig cochlea
    • Labbe D, Teranishi MA, Hess A, et al. Activation of caspase-3 is associated with oxidative stress in the hydropic guinea pig cochlea. Hear Res 2005; 202:21-27. The authors demonstrated increased expression of caspase-3 and nitrotyrosine in the lateral wall, blood vessels, and supporting cells of the organ of Corti in hydropic animals. This study suggests a role of oxidative stress in the development of hydrops and hearing loss in the animal model of Meniere's disease.
