This is an excellent 10-year review of research on HIV risk among youth with mental health needs. Its focus ranges from epidemiologic findings to social and developmental considerations among these youth. It also provides information on the biologic and neurologic aspects of HIV/AIDS, treatment of HIV/AIDS, and a thorough review of effective prevention and intervention efforts in the field. This review provides a model of social and personal characteristics that influence risky behaviors among youth with mental health needs. It emphasizes four primary constructs: peer and partner relationships, individual characteristics, family context, and environmental factors that influence risky behavior among these youth.
