Thirteen healthy volunteers were given placebo or 15, 22.5, or 30 mg/kg intravenous paracetamol in a double-blind, crossover study. Platelet function assessed by photometric aggregometry and by measuring release of thromboxane B2 was transiently and dose-dependently depressed after paracetamol infusion.

    • Gray A, Kehlet H, Bonnet F, Rawal N. Predicting postoperative analgesia outcomes: NNT league tables or procedure-specific evidence? Br J Anaesth 2005; 94:710-714. Numbers-needed-to-treat data with paracetamol are reviewed in relation to the magnitude of surgical injury. Paracetamol was less effective for pain relief after orthopaedic procedures than after dental procedures. The relative risk ratio for more than 50% pain relief was greater after dental surgery than after orthopaedic surgery. The analgesic effect of paracetamol depends on the surgical procedure.
