This research-based book provides a major review of the literature on the experiences of family members who live with substance misusers and discusses evidence collected from families living in England, Mexico City and Aboriginal Australia. The set of core experiences of being a family member of a substance misuser does not seem to vary much across the globe.

    • UKATT Research Team. Effectiveness of treatment for alcohol problems: findings of the randomised UK Alcohol Treatment Trial. BMJ 2005; 331:541-544. This key paper makes a significant contribution to the alcohol treatment literature by reporting the results of a carefully designed and conducted large pragmatic, randomised, comparative trial of the effectiveness of SBNT, a novel treatment for alcohol problems with that of the proved MET. The social treatment did not differ in effectiveness from the motivational one.

    • UKATT Research Team. Cost-effectiveness of treatment for alcohol problems: findings of the randomised UK Alcohol Treatment Trial. BMJ 2005; 331:544-558. This paper reports the results of cost-effectiveness analysis of the UKATT showing that the two treatments did not differ significantly in cost-effectiveness and that both therapies saved about five times as much in expenditure on health and social and criminal justice as they cost. This is an important paper as the cost-effectiveness analysis was based on the collection of prospective data as part of the trial design.
