    • (b) Formation of C in eq 5, at first glance, seems to arise from a pinacol-pinacolone-type rearrangement, which, however, requires an acid catalyst! In another experiment, a NMR spectroscopic analysis of the crude reaction mixture, without using any acid during workup or silica gel chromatography, showed the presence of a similar amount of C, suggesting that C arises via the rearrangement reaction under basic conditions.
