Activity limitations and participation restrictions in women with hand osteoarthritis: patients' descriptions and associations between dimensions of functioning. Ann Rheum Dis 2005; 64:1633-1638. This study illustrated the importance of considering the exact content of measures. A measure of hand-related activity limitation was associated with impairment, whereas a general measure of activity and participation was more strongly related to personal factors than impairment.

    • Xie F, Li SC, Thumboo J. Do health-related quality-of-life domains and items in knee and hip osteoarthritis vary in importance across social-cultural contexts? A qualitative systematic literature review. Semin Arthritis Rheum 2005; 34:793-804. This review of important health-related quality-of-life domains and items in knee and hip osteoarthritis found that only an activity limitation item 'housekeeping activities' was common across all five countries (Sweden, UK, France, USA, Canada). There was more consistency across countries for the activity limitation items compared with pain and participation/ recreational items. This emphasizes that multicentre trials need to be careful that items and measures used are valid across cultures.
