4. [2] in the report on the isolation of the natural product was an arbitrary choice for the absolute stereochemistry of the auripyrones. We chose to target the enantiomer of that depicted by Suenaga et al. because of the commercial availability of only the S enantiomer of 2-methylbutanol, which we used to gain access to the remote C18 stereocenter.
