For instance, such hierarchical thinking was evident in China's late 1970s decision to invade Vietnam. In November 1978 Vietnam signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation with the Soviet Union. A month later they invaded Cambodia, a Chinese ally. Outraged that "little brother" Vietnam had betrayed "big brother" China, Deng Xiaoping launched a disastrous war in February 1979 to "teach 'Little Brother' a lesson."
