Beyond this point the reaction mixture became progressively darker in colour, until after 90 min the ion due to 6 was absent from the mass spectrum and only a small peak corresponding to the nitroimidazole was seen. All attempts at isolation of the product 6 failed and further analysis was therefore not possible.
