    • The rhombic term E has very little influence on the magnetic susceptibility. Taking it into account would lead to meaningless overparameterization. Moreover it is usually impossible to determine the sign of D from susceptibility measurements. Only simultaneous fitting of magnetization versus field at different temperatures allows the sign of D to be determined (or EPR measurements for instance)
