    • Material parameters are often only considered to depend upon the frequency, e.g. ε{lunate}(ω) and μ(ω). However they are in general functions of both frequency and the wave vector κ, ε{lunate}(ωκ) and μ(ω,κ). For small values of κ, they can still be approximated and described by ε{lunate}(ω) and μ(ω). However, if the size of the objects is about the same as the wavelength or larger, then there is a significant dependence of the material parameters on κ and it is no longer correct to describe the properties of the material by material parameters that ascribe a separate electric ε{lunate}(ω) and magnetic μ(ω) dependence.
