    • To my knowledge, no scholar has noted this fact before. The image of Russia as communism is conspicuously absent from the major works on the image of Russia in France in the nineteenth century. • American society had already attracted the attention of some of the eighteenth-century philosophes, such as Diderot, Voltaire, Turgot and Brissot, for whom it appeared as a land of freedom, equality and tolerance. In some Rousseauian circles America was considered a paradise of rural simplicity, equality, and virtue, and, as is well known, the American political texts played a major role in the French revolution of 1789. In the first half of the nineteenth century the image of the USA as a 'space of the possible' remained potent, for both radicals and entrepreneurs and adventurers. But the novelty of Tocqueville's America is that it provided an example of political conservatism that reconciled democracy and the liberal definition of freedom, detaching the American model from the republicans' radicalism
