    • CMOS integrated circuits use a metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor that allows them to consume energy only in switching transitions, and virtually no energy in the wait state. In contrast, the first microelectronic circuits used bipolar junction transistors (invented in 1947), where there is continuous energy consumption during both the switching and while waiting for a circuit switch. First applied during the 1960s, CMOS' energy efficiency now makes it the preferred type of circuit for the vast majority of integrated circuit applications.
