9. 400 mg of D-mannitol was mixed with 100 mg of PVP at 10 Hz for 6 min (2 min mixing followed by 2 min cool-down, repeated three times). Another 500 mg of D-mannitol was added for a final PVP concentration of 10% w/w. The new mixture was mixed in the same way.

15. This analysis was possible because the PVP prevented the conversion of δ to α during melting. This conversion happens in pure D-mannitol (see ref 11), making the sizes of the endotherms not proportional to the amounts of the two polymorphs.
