4] unit to form four linked barrelane cages. Besides binary molecules, numerous ternary or even multinary clusters were reported that exhibit different atom types at the A or B positions; in general A is the more electronegative element whereas B represents metal and/or semi-metal atoms. For a detailed explanation see refs. [4b, 4c].

-3 is observed close to Ba(6). Different coordination spheres, slight distortions and somewhat tilted relative positions, which can be gathered from figure 3, explain the occurrence of ever two crystallographically independent, ternary anions in 3 and 4. Further details of the crystal structure investigation for compounds 1-4 can be obtained from the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe, D-76344 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany, (fax; (+49) 7247-808-666; e-mail: crysdata@fiz-karlsruhe.de) on quoting the depository numbers CSD 416008 (4), 416009 (2), 416010 (3), 416011 (1).
