    • Rodrigue JR, Cornell DL, Howard RJ. Organ donation decision: comparison of donor and nondonor families. Am J Transplant 2006; 6:190-198. This article describes a study that was very neatly carried out with a reasonable number of subjects (285). The authors provide a good overview of research about relatives' reasons for consent or refusal. What makes the study interesting is that the authors looked at other variables too, such as how they were approached by the OPO, what they thought about the competence of the requester and whether they thought the donation request was well timed. The way the study was carried out should be an example for other researchers.

    • Siminoff LA, Burant C, Youngner SJ. Death and organ procurement: public beliefs and attitudes. Soc Sci Med 2004; 59:2325-2334. This is very good article that highlights why professionals, as well as ordinary people, have difficulty with the concept of brain death. Nearly a third of the sample studied were willing to donate the organs of patients they classified as being alive (vegetative state or coma), thereby violating the dead donor rule. The authors indicate that it is not clear whether the public lacks education or is rejecting the current formal medical-legal idea of brain death. Any change in the dead donor rule should be preceded by public debate and education.

This article is especially useful for the good overview of research results related to viewpoints of minorities and how these differ from mainstream viewpoints. The study that is described is not bad, but only supports earlier findings. Interesting is the comparison with data from 10-15 years ago.

It describes a revolutionary theory of cultural relativism and its applications in a range of professions. It builds on the first book by the first author Culture's Consequences [14] which is an even richer source of cultural information. All healthcare professionals must read both books.

In this article a grassroots approach is described, 141 Muslims were observed in their daily functioning. It gives more insight into the ordinary Muslim's views on healthcare in general and organ donation particularly. ..The authors put the results in a broader perspective of how Islam is dealing with organ donation. The article provides a good overview of the dilemmas Muslims are facing.

"Don't know enough about it!": awareness and attitudes toward organ donation and transplantation among the black Caribbean and black African population in Lambeth, Southwark, and Lewisham, United Kingdom. Transplantation 2004; 78:420-425. In this article the results of a grassroots approach among black Caribbean and black African populations are described. It is one of the few studies about these populations in the UK. The article is interesting because the authors got very private and honest answers from their subjects. It is the only study known to me in which minorities took a critical look at themselves and indicated that they also should take action, instead of waiting.

In particular, the call for cultural awareness in healthcare staff is appealing.

    • Burger JM, Messian N, Patel S, et al. What a coincidence! The effects of incidental similarity on compliance. PSPB 2004; 30:35-43. In this article some experiments are described in which the effects of incidental similarities, not related to organ donation, are measured. The experiments are carried out in an excellent way, so that the results are robust. These are very useful for experiments that should be carried out to increase the number of positive decisions about organ donation. The methodology can also be used.

    • The impact of changes in practice in organ procurement on the satisfaction of donor relatives
    • Blok GA. The impact of changes in practice in organ procurement on the satisfaction of donor relatives. Patient Educ Couns 2005; 58:104-113. In this article the results of longitudinal comparative study is described. The study was undertaken to explore if any changes had occurred in the behaviour of professionals involved in organ donation over a period of more than 10 years. Satisfaction ratings of different groups of donor relatives were taken as outcome measures. Evaluations were gathered about the whole process from arrival in hospital to aftercare. Relatives in later years were significantly more satisfied than in earlier years about professional staff behaviour. How death was announced explained 60% of the variance of the satisfaction about the donation procedure, general information supply and genuine understanding were other important variables. Results indicate that future interventions aiming at decreasing the number of family refusals should therefore be competence-based.
