According to J. M. McBride, it is potentially relevant that thin surface water layers are almost ubiquitous in atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies of "dry" samples that are not held in high vacuum. The resulting meniscus forces are an important generality in AFM studies (private communication, 2005).

Another hypothesis currently being investigated theoretically by J. Anwar and J. Kendrick (Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation, Bradford) is that involving surface reconstruction. The surfaces, being perpendicular to a polar axis, have a different charge distribution and are expected to undergo different degrees of reconstruction, giving rise to different kinetics of attachment.
