    • Jan Dick has a wide range of disciplinary expertise in tree physiology, functional ecology and land management. Ute Skiba has over 20 years' experience of studying trace gas fluxes from temperate and tropical soils. Bob Munro has technical expertise in a range of techniques relevant to tropical land management. Douglas Deans coordinates several international projects investigating resource utilization in the tropics. Collectively the authors are part of a dynamic team studying the biophysical and social implications of land management issues in temperate and tropical biomes. Editors: Peter Furley, John Grace and Patrick Meir. This paper is part of the Special Issue, Tropical savannas and seasonally dry forests: vegetation and environment, which owes its origins to a meeting held at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, in September 2003.
