Insights into pathogen immune evasion mechanisms: Anaplasma phagocytophilum fails to induce an apoptosis differentiation program in human neutrophils. J Immunol 2005; 174:6364-6372. This outstanding paper was the first of several microarray studies of A. phagocytophilum infected cells. It demonstrated that, unlike that of other bacterial species, uptake of A. phagocytophilum fails to stimulate the neutrophil apoptosis differentiation program and also provided gene profiling data that the bacterium interferes with apoptosis gene expression to delay spontaneous neutrophil apoptosis in vitro.

Moreover, this paper shows that addition of the bacterium at high concentrations leads to a dose and incubation time-dependent mobilization of NADPH oxidase and neutrophil degranulation that results in a significantly lowered respiratory burst upon secondary stimulation, thus providing an explanation for earlier misinterpretations that the bacterium directly inhibits immediate NADPH oxidase activity.
