    • P. Feinstein, and P. Mombaerts A contextual model for axonal sorting into glomeruli in the mouse olfactory system Cell 117 2004 817 831 This extensive mouse genetic study reveals a major contribution of ORs in determining 'axonal identity' of ORNs. The behavior of a given ORN is dependent on the context of what other axons are present, leading the authors to propose a contextual model in which ORN axons monitor neighboring axons to decide which axons to converge with to form a glomerulus.

    • Developmental origin of wiring specificity in the olfactory system of Drosophila
    • G.S.X.E. Jefferis, R.M. Vyas, D. Berdnik, A. Ramaekers, R.F. Stocker, N. Tanaka, K. Ito, and L. Luo Developmental origin of wiring specificity in the olfactory system of Drosophila Development 131 2004 117 130 This extensive developmental study describes organization of the Drosophila antennal lobe in early developmental stages. Prior to ORN axon arrival, the antennal lobe is mostly filled with projection neuron dendrites, which have formed a prototypic spatial map. It indicates that projection neurons have an autonomous self organization capability, challenging the previously prevailing view of sensory neurons instructing spatial organization of the first olfactory relay station in the brain.
