This was the first randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of ICD therapy shortly after a large myocardial infarction. The results show that the ICD-associated reduction in arrhythmic mortality is offset by an increase in non-arrhythmic cardiovascular mortality.

This was the first randomized study comparing cardiac resynchronization therapy with or without back-up defibrillation therapy in patients with congestive heart failure. Only resynchronization therapy combined with an ICD proved to reduce mortality.
9. Bardy GH, Mark DB, Poole JE, et al. Amiodarone or an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator for congestive heart failure. N Engl J Med 2005; 352:225-237. This was the largest randomized ICD trial for primary prevention of sudden death. Device therapy reduced all-cause mortality, whereas prophylactic amiodarone therapy was without an effect on survival.

This trial randomized patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy to ICD therapy versus conventional treatment. In NYHA class III patients, device therapy was associated with reduced all-cause mortality.
