9. Typical value for the tip height above the surface is 5 Å. Oxide thickness and alumina dielectric constant are 5.6 Å and 10, respectively. A similar estimate of the fraction of voltage drop across the oxide is obtained by measuring the slight changes in the spacing between peaks in the progressions when the height of the tip above the molecule is varied.
