    • note
    • We follow the conventional use of the nomenclature international relations and International Relations, respectively, to distinguish between 'belonging' and 'referring'. Lower-case international relations are those structures, agents and processes that belong to the realm that is the focus of study, and the capitalised International Relations, or IR, refers to conceptualisations of these and thus the discipline of study. The need to do this, as will become clear, is that although the two clearly relate to one another they do not necessarily correspond to each other.
