    • Arseneault L, Cannon M, Witton J, Murray RM. Causal association between cannabis and psychosis: examination of the evidence. Br J Psychiatry 2004; 184:110-117. An excellent article that provides an overview of recent evidence pertaining to the association between cannabis and psychosis. It draws upon findings from five longitudinal population-based studies, and contains a useful discussion of the methodological issues, with clear tabular comparison of studies. It concludes that an association exists but that the nature of this relationship is hard to define, and calls for further research on the mechanisms for this association and the impact of early usage.

    • Degenhardt L, Hall W, Lynskey M. Exploring the association between cannabis use and depression. Addiction 2003; 98:1493-1504. This article gives a comprehensive review of the literature pertaining to this issue of cannabis use and depression. It presents a review of the mix of evidence presented and gives a useful overview of methodological issues relating to research of this type. It runs through possible explanations for the existence of an association, reviews evidence in relation to those explanations, and concludes that a modest association between heavy or problematical cannabis use and the development of depression exists, but that the relationship is complex and it is too early to rule out the mediating effects of other factors.

This article attempts to determine the effect of psychiatric disorder on attempted suicide among adolescents with substance use disorder. It found that suicide attempts in males were associated with a significantly earlier onset of alcohol use disorder plus significantly more mood and disruptive behaviour disorder symptoms compared with non-attempting males. In females, higher counts of substance misuse disorder and mood disorder were associated with suicide attempts when compared with non-attempting females.

    • Degenhardt L, Hall W, Lynskey M. Testing hypotheses about the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis. Drug Alcohol Depend 2003; 71:37-48. An excellent but methodologically complex article utilizing modelling to test expected trends against observable trends to assess four hypotheses on the associations between cannabis misuse and the development of psychosis. It contains a reasonable review of the evidence available, and also looks into methodological issues relating to past research. It concludes that cannabis misuse may precipitate disorder in individuals who are already vulnerable to developing psychosis, and worsens the course of the disorder in those who already have developed it.

An excellent UK-specific article that investigates the relationship between an increased risk of poor mental health and a number of other biographic, sociodemographic, social economic, and social functioning factors, both of the child and the wider family. The findings can be summarized thus: children with mental disorder were more likely to be boys, to be living in a lower income household within the social housing sector with a lone parent, and classified as being within social class V.
