    • The chemistry of sexual deception in an orchid-wasp pollination system
    • This paper embodies the state-of-the-art in chemical ecology and emphasizes the importance of collaboration between biologists and chemists. The concentration of pheromone in female wasps and labella was so minute that traditional headspace methods without EAD would never have identified the active compound, which is new to science. The synthetic and analytical chemical expertise in Francke's laboratory has consistently provided pivotal information, enabling ongoing advances in the study of sexually deceptive orchids and their pollinators.

    • A phylogenetic study of pollinator conservatism among sexually deceptive orchids
    • This study provides the first independent case study in which pollinator diversification among families of Hymenoptera is associated with shifts in scent chemistry and visual cues. If the GC-EAD data from this paper are representative of the entire Chiloglottis genus, one conclusion would be that adaptively radiated lineages that have odor-driven pollinator dynamics can undergo adaptive radiation into phenological or edaphic niches without fundamentally altering floral phenotype, as is true for many Oenothera and Malpighiaceae.

    • Echoes of bat pollinated bell-shaped flowers: Conspicuous for nectar-feeding bats?
    • This ground-breaking study characterizes a novel dimension of floral phenotype: the echo fingerprint. Botanists have suspected that bell-shaped flowers have evolved to fit bats' heads in order to enhance pollen transfer, but few anticipated that the corollas would, in the authors' words, "focus sound like a cat's eye". The standardized measures that are detailed in this paper could be used to test whether brush-shaped flowers that are pollinated by bats, and nocturnal flowers that have other pollinators (e.g. hawkmoths) have fundamentally different echo fingerprints.

    • This exhaustive study highlights the allure of SPME (solid phase microextraction) as a tool with which to explore fragrance variation on small spatial and temporal scales. The authors tackle the dauntingly complex odor of Sauromatum guttatum and demonstrate that scent composition differs markedly between the appendix and club-shaped organs within the floral chamber, suggesting multiple roles for odor across the inflorescence.
