    • 2O lattice by about 0.03% between 50 and 100 K. We have done calculations that include this difference and, while the lattice spacing has some effect on the isotope dependent diffusion barrier, the major effect is due to zero-point energy differences. To focus on the major source of the isotope effect we have not included the known lattice difference in our calculations.

    • The unit cell consists of 16 rigid water molecules and a He atom. The degrees of freedom are thus 3 translations and 3 rotations for each water molecule and 3 translations for the He atom for a total of 99. The 3 degrees of freedom associated with translations of the unit cell and have no net contribution to the ΔG, thus leaving only 96 relevant vibrational modes.
