Rotary valve pressure-pulse generators, which alternately restrict and open the flow of the drilling fluid, cause varying pressure waves to be generated in the drilling fluid at a carrier frequency that is proportional to the rate of interruption. Downhole sensor-response data are transmitted to the surface by modulating this acoustic carrier frequency.
