    • Recently, the nudged elastic band (NEB) method [G. Henkelman, B. P. Uberuaga, and H. Jonsson, J. Chem. Phys. JCPSA6 0021-9606 10.1063/1.1329672 113, 9901 (2000)] has been widely used for evaluating the energy barrier along the reaction pathway. The NEB method needs to calculate the forces at all points on the chain concurrently, move all the points according to the forces, and repeat the calculation until all the forces vanished. On the other hand, in our gradient projection method we obtain the lowest energy pathway by reducing the force on a molecule (including the substrate) with a constraint which is varied along the reaction pathway.

    • For ethylene adsorption on Si(001) Fan [Phys. Rev. B PRBMDO 0163-1829 10.1103/PhysRevB.72.165305 72, 165305 (2005)] used the NEB method to obtain an energy barrier of 0.06 eV from the precursor state to the [2+2] addition product along the asymmetric reaction pathway. This value is very close to that (0.02 eV) obtained by the gradient projection method (Ref.).
