    • DiClemente RJ, Salazar LF, Crosby RA, et al. Prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections among adolescents: the importance of a socioecological perspective: a commentary. Public Health 2005; 119: 825-836. This paper presents an extensive review of the empirical literature to identify the antecedents and determinants of STIs and STI-associated sexual behavior. Based on this review, the authors categorize adolescents' STI-associated risk behaviors into relevant domains. Understanding the influence of these different domains, salient in adolescents' lives, is critical for the design of optimally effective STI-prevention interventions. Finally, it is asserted that STI-prevention programs need to be developed across domains to maximize their impact and potential to access the broadest range of adolescent audiences.

    • DiClemente RJ, Wingood GM, Harrington KF, et al. Efficacy of an HIV prevention intervention for African American adolescent girls: a randomized controlled trial. JAMA 2004; 292:171-179. This article presents data derived from a randomized controlled trial describing the impact of a gender and culturally congruent STI-/HIV-prevention program for African-American female adolescents of 14-18 years of age. To our knowledge, this is the first article to demonstrate substantial intervention effects across a range of behavioral outcomes (i.e. condom use, condom-application skills, acquisition of a new partner), mediators of STI-/HIV-preventive behaviors (i.e. self-efficacy to use condoms, STI-/HIV-prevention knowledge, barriers to condom use, etc.), and most important, a marked reduction in biologically confirmed STI incidence at 12-month follow up.

The authors note that while some programs have demonstrated efficacy, program dissemination has not been efficient or timely to address the burgeoning STI epidemic.
