39. We have controlled for this effect as much as possible by including whether the bride had been a domestic servant before her marriage. Since domestic servants were the quintessential migratory female group, this variable is a proxy indicating, inter alia, those couples who might have met elsewhere, i.e. not in the locality of marriage.
