Conservative Christians advise that heterosexuals should indeed refrain from sex, except in marriage. Liberal Christians believe a number of different things on this topic. Some believe extramarital sex to be acceptable, regardless of the genders of the partners, while others see any extramarital sex as equally wrong and thus advocate even more loudly for same-sex marriage rights. Ultimately these different understandings within the UMC point to different understandings of what it means for their policy to state that sexuality "God's good gift" - is it a gift like a talent, to be nurtured, practiced and shared, or a gift like line chocolates, to be savored in moderation?
