    • The term co-crystal in this paper is used to describe a subset of the much larger group of multi-component crystals that includes salts, solvates and hydrates. Specifically, co-crystal here is intended to imply a crystal that contains the unionised acid or base in question in addition to at least one other molecule. These are then further subdivided as follows: neutral co-crystals-the unionised acid or base + another neutral component (not a solvent) ionic co-crystals-the unionised acid or base+ another ionic component co-crystals of salts-the unionised acid or base + a salt of the acid or base. This definition includes crystals that could be described as solvates, for example multi-component crystals containing acetic acid. For simplicity and consistency however, the term co-crystal has been used throughout.
