    • P. Pinto da Silva, and D. Branton Membrane splitting in freeze-etching. Covalently bound ferritin as a membrane marker J Cell Biol 45 1970 598 One of the first papers evidencing the opening of a previously frozen membrane during the fracturing process. This showed that the fracture preferentially propagates at the junction between the hydrophobic parts of the phospholipids forming the membrane. The presence of grains at the surface of the fractured membrane was interpreted as being due to membrane proteins. This opened the way to many studies of protein aggregation inside the membrane, which is still a very active field of application for FF-TEM.

Sammon Electron microscopy of a cholesteric liquid crystal and its blue phase Phys Rev A 29 1984 2957 2959 The first paper applying freeze fracture to thermotropic liquid crystals. This paper shows that the phases microstructures (cholesteric and a blue phase of type I) are conserved after the quenching process. The authors show a picture of the cholesteric phase in which the cholesteric pitch is clearly identified and its length value is coherent with optical studies. The obtained micrographs for the type I blue phase confirm its body-centered-cubic symmetry.
