Colloid Interface Sci. 285 2005 388 394 This article reports the formation of W/O nano-emulsions by the PIT emulsification method in water/mixed non-ionic surfactant/oil systems. The surfactants used were polyoxyethylene lauryl ethers which differs in the degree of ethoxylation. Nano-emulsion droplet size was found to be practically independent on the surfactant mixing ratio. However, the stability increased by increasing the ratio of the most hydrophilic surfactant. These results are interpreted in terms of the system phase behaviour.

Solans A study of the relation between bicontinuous microemulsions and oil/water nanoemulsion formation Langmuir 19 2003 7196 7200 In this paper the main requirement for O/W nano-emulsion formation with minimum droplet size by the PIT method is described to be the complete solubilization of the oil component in a bicontinuous microemulsion, independent of whether the initial phase equilibrium is single or multiphase. A mechanism of nano-emulsion formation is also proposed.

Dispersions of small oil droplets relatively stable are formed without the use of surfactants or mechanical energy. The authors show that the properties of the dispersion are controllable by varying the proportion of the three components, their densities, mutual solubility and temperature.

The predominant droplety growth mechanism was found to be Ostwald ripening. Deviations between theoretical and experimental ripening rates are explained in terms of the presence of inverse micelles which facilitates mass transfer and Brownian motion.

Chapel Hybrid polymer latexes: acrylics-polyurethane from miniemulsion polymerization: properties of hybrid latexes versus blends Polymer 46 2005 1113 1124 Hybrid polymer latexes polyurethane/polyacrylic esters, are prepared through nano-emulsion polymerization of polyurethane solutions in acrylic monomers. Moreover, a study of the specific features and mechanical properties of films obtained from different hybrid latexes are also described.
