Spotty calcification typifies the culprit plaque in patients with acute myocardial infarction: An intravascular ultrasound study
-
Ehara S, Kobayashi Y, Yoshiyama M, et al. Spotty calcification typifies the culprit plaque in patients with acute myocardial infarction: an intravascular ultrasound study. Circulation 2004; 110:3424-3429. This study of 178 patients prior to intervention used intravascular ultrasound to compare morphology of calcification associated with acute or stable coronary syndromes. Numerous small, spotty calcifications in fibrofatty lesions characterized vulnerable plaques, whereas lesions in stable angina pectoris had fewer but larger calcium deposits. This study underscores the difficulty in determining the role of calcification in plaque stability based solely on finite element models.

-
Lomashvili KA, Khawandi W, O'Neill WC. Reduced plasma pyrophosphate levels in hemodialysis patients. J Am Soc Nephrol 2005; 16:2495-2500. This is the first study to link hemodialysis patients with reduced plasma pyrophosphate levels, underscoring the significance of pyrophosphate as a regulator of vascular calcification in CKD. The study also determines that a significant amount of pyrophosphate is further cleared during dialysis.

Serum osteoprotegerin levels and the extent of vascular calcification in haemodialysis patients
-
Nitta K, Akiba T, Uchida K, et al. Serum osteoprotegerin levels and the extent of vascular calcification in haemodialysis patients. Nephrol Dial Transplant 2004; 19:1886-1889. A study on 102 hemodialysis patients that reports an unexpected positive correlation between serum steoprotegerin levels and the grade of aortic calcification, supporting the correlation between steoprotegerin and bone loss. The study also suggests a possible role of steoprotegerin in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation in dialysis patients.
