lat for a grain size of 10 μm. Equilibration times would show an enhancement on the same order, whereas diffusion length scales would be a factor of 6 longer. For grain sizes larger than 100 μm, the effect would become insignificant. The grain size of the lower mantle is estimated to be on the order of 100 to 1000 μm (12). Thus, if no substantial grain size reduction occurs, lattice diffusion should be the predominant mode of diffusion in the lower mantle.
