Computer modeling study introducing the concept of "volumetric intrusion" and highlighting the obligatory spinal canal impingement required by most hook fixation devices. Found that in contrast, screws must miss medially by 2 mm to have the same intrusion volume as an average hook and over 3 mm to produce the same intrusion as the largest hook.

Probing for thoracic pedicle screw tract violation(s): Is it valid?
-
In press
-
Lehman RA, Potter BK, Kuklo TR, et al.: Probing for thoracic pedicle screw tract violation(s): is it valid? J Spinal Disord. In press. Delineates the relative intra- and interobserver reliability of probing for thoracic pedicle violations in a laboratory study. Determined that probing has good intraobserver reliability, but not interobserver reliability, in experienced hands and that the utility of the technique is experience dependent

Effect of various tapping diameters on insertion of thoracic pedicle screws: A biomechanical analysis
-
Kuklo TR, Lehman RA: Effect of various tapping diameters on insertion of thoracic pedicle screws: a biomechanical analysis. Spine 2003, 28:2066-2071. Biomechanical study clearly demonstrating superior fixation of thoracic pedicle screws with undertapping of the pilot hole. Undertapping by 1 mm resulted in a 93% increase in MIT as compared with line-to-line tapping.

Physical characteristics of polyaxial-headed pedicle screws and biomechanical comparison of load with their failure
-
Fogel GR, Reitman CA, Weiqiang L, Esses SI: Physical characteristics of polyaxial-headed pedicle screws and biomechanical comparison of load with their failure. Spine 2003, 28:470-473. Biomechanical study demonstrating that the polyaxial screw coupling failed prior to screw breakage in all of nine different instrumentation systems. Suggests that this may be a protective effect in preventing screw breakage in vivo.

Use of the anatomic trajectory for thoracic pedicle screw salvage after failure/violation using the straight-forward technique: A biomechanical analysis
-
Lehman RA, Kuklo TR: Use of the anatomic trajectory for thoracic pedicle screw salvage after failure/violation using the straight-forward technique: a biomechanical analysis. Spine 2003, 28:2072-2077.
