In May 2004, Abu Hamza was arrested and detained pending an extradition request from the United States for him to face serious terrorist charges. The request claims he has been in contact with high-ranking Taliban and Al-Qaida terrorists, and that he helped militants who took 16 westerners hostage in Yemen in 1998. It also alleges he tried to set up a training camp for jihad in Oregon. In August 2004 he was arrested under the UK's Terrorism Act 2000 on suspicion of involvement of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. He was subsequently charged with 16 offences, including soliciting murder and racial hatred and crimes under the Terrorism Act. The extradition proceedings have been suspended pending the outcome of the UK case.
