    • The effect of such a term on the type of heterogeneous motion discussed here has not been unambiguously demonstrated. Nor is it clear that such a repulsion exists between colloidal particles studied in experiments.

    • After this work was submitted, we became aware of related work in press by Puertas, Fuchs, and Cates (which appeared as J. Chem. Phys. 2004, 121, 2813). That work also confirms the earlier central ideas contained in the theory of Geissler and Reichman (cond-mat/0402673). Their conclusions differ from those presented in this paper in that they view the bimodal distribution of particle displacements as indicative of a form of dynamical heterogeneity unique to systems with attractive interactions. We contend that this bimodality is generic to glassy systems. The study of Puertas et al. further differs from our own in focusing on a much lower volume fraction, for which there is no corresponding repulsive glassy state to compare. It is interesting that much of the behavior they reported exists even at the very high volume fractions studied here.
