11. For the sake of clarity, we shall discuss the case of R = Me, only. The other benzyl or allyl groups might serve for various chemical manipulations.
12. To a solution of 1,2-O-isopropylidene-3-O-methylxylofuranose (2.45 mmol) in an acetic anhydride (3.46 mL)/acetic acid (0.42 mL) was added 7 μL of fuming sulfuric acid. After 2 h the solution was cooled (0°C) and neutralized with a sodium carbonate solution. Usual extraction with ethyl acetate and purification gave 8 (R = Me) in 85% yield.
