Clin Infect Dis 2005; 40:184-187. This small study reported that ESAT-6-specific, IFN-γ-producing T cells are highly concentrated in tuberculous pleural fluid, and that these cells have phenotypic characteristics of Th1 effector memory CD4 cells. This test shows promise for rapid diagnosis of tuberculous pleuritis.
