Major outcomes in high risk patients randomised to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or calcium channel blocker versus diuretic. The antihypertensive and lipid-lowering treatment to prevent heart attack trial (ALLHAT). JAMA 2002;288:2981-97. With over 42 000 patients ALLHAT was the largest randomised control trial of antihypertensive treatment to date and included 15 094 black patients. It snowed that thiazide type diuretics provided effective treatment at low cost.
