XBP1: A link between the unfolded protein response, lipid biosynthesis, and biogenesis of the endoplasmic reticulum
-
R. Sriburi, S. Jackowski, K. Mori, and J.W. Brewer XBP1: a link between the unfolded protein response, lipid biosynthesis, and biogenesis of the endoplasmic reticulum J Cell Biol 167 2004 35 41 A demonstration that overdriving one branch of the UPR in mammalian cells does indeed lead to increased phospholipid synthetic rate, and to the appearance of membrane structures consistent with increased membrane production. This suggests that the UPR does have a role in the creation of proliferated membranes; whether this is the primary cause or a late aspect of membrane increase remains to be determined.

Starvation triggers the delivery of the endoplasmic reticulum to the vacuole via autophagy in yeast
-
M. Hamasaki, T. Noda, M. Baba, and Y. Ohsumi Starvation triggers the delivery of the endoplasmic reticulum to the vacuole via autophagy in yeast Traffic 6 2005 56 65 This work indicates that the now well-defined autophagic pathway may be able to participate in reversal of ER proliferation, as indicated by the classic studies in [ 29,31 ]. This sort of analysis needs to be applied to actual cases of proliferated ER.
