    • These numbers should not be directly compared to equilibrium concentrations of carbon in metal. The latter are governed by equilibria between different phases, and carbon can cluster at grain boundaries and defects, which increases the effective local concentration. Our calculation shows a difference in affinities and behaviors as a function of concentration.
