    • There are differences in adopting lean production. For example, consumer electronics in the U.S., particularly the television industry, is lagging in adopting lean production. German companies in the chemical industry are also lagging in abandoning their traditional model of functional specialization and hierarchical structure. Despite these exceptions, lean production and collaborative interfirm relations initiated in the auto and electronics industries serve as an attractive model to traditional practices. For differences between industries in adopting Japanese-style practices, see J. K. Liker, W. M. Fruin, and P. S. Adler, eds., Remade in America: Transplanting and Transforming Japanese Management Systems (New York: Oxford University Press, 1999).

    • Although Germans and Americans both tried to adopt similar, closely interactive customer-supplier relations in the 1990s, the Germans, who had a relatively strong tradition of a civic public sphere, created a more stable market regime than the Americans, who lacked such traditions due to their different methods of deliberation in creating new norms.
