The idiotypic network in autoimmunity: Antibodies that bind antibodies that bind antibodies
-
Shoenfeld Y. The idiotypic network in autoimmunity: antibodies that bind antibodies that bind antibodies. Nat Med 2004; 10:17-18. Shoenfeld and coworkers demonstrated in multiple animal models of autoimmunity that antiidiotypes raised against autoantibodies induced the production of anti-antiidiotypes that possessed characteristics of the initial autoantibodies and caused disease after immunization. They hypothesized that antibodies regulate each other by suppressing or augmenting the immune reaction.

Peptide self-aggregation and peptide complementarity as bases for the evolution of peptide receptors: A review
-
Root-Bernstein RS. Peptide self-aggregation and peptide complementarity as bases for the evolution of peptide receptors: a review. J Mol Recognit 2005; 18:40-49. Root-Bernstein and colleagues widened the definition of complementary peptides to include those whose sequence is determined by reading the nucleoside sequence of complementary mRNA in the alternative 3′-5′. They also formulated the 'duel antigen theory' to delineate how they propose complementary proteins contribute to autoimmune disease.
